Welcome to the Backwater Brewery and the Backwater Brew Club!
Originally called "Swampwater Brewery" because of the Swampwater (Pecan Brown) Ale we brewed, Backwater
Brewery was born of four important reasons:
- My brother-in-law's desire to brew,
- a lie that brewing would be cheap,
- my inability to leave stuff alone (adult A.D.D. gone right)
- and a not-so-wise lack of adult supervision on my wife's part.
Backwater Brewery is no longer a Sunday morning solo act. It recently became more of an extended family
of home brewers where full flavors, not styles, are brewed by concensus. Our focus is mainly on
all-grain, full-figured ales and good cigars. We're looking for voluptuous
brews - you won't find any man-purse, waif-thin, supermodel beers here.
The beers and their names reflect my origins of central Lousiana, but with a
brew-by-concensus attitude, new brew recipies like Antoinette's Express are becoming regulars
on-tap.
I shot for flavors, colors and aromas that I thought I would enjoy. Some brews came from a lengthy
process of evolution, while others were pleasurable mistakes. I've never looked to make exact
knock-offs of other beer, rather, my aim was to always create appealing brews which I knew
would impress me. Because... it really is all about me. :)
Beer which we currently brew (all-grain):
- Bayou Blonde
(currently in three different concepts: Original, Dumb Blonde and Nouveau
Blonde)
- California Creole
American Pale Ale (mashed with toasted almonds)
- Swampwater Ale
Nut Brown Ale (mashed with roasted pecans)
- Antoinette's Express
Porter (fine Italian espresso and chocolate)
- Pirogue Stout
Sour-mash Dry Stout
- River Road
Oak-barrel Stout (aged using red oak strips stolen during an
addition to the bar at our local pub and real vanilla beans (it blocks out the sun))
- 90min IPA
All-grain IPA (hopped with nothing but Cascade hops)
- Panty Dropper
Golden Ale fermented on a generous bed of dried cherries (pretty much it is
what it is: cherry-flavored alcohol with a hint of beer in there
somewhere (this one is for the women-folk and "men" with female
tendencies))
Screw the Purists - brew what you like.
